Road trips with Halalbooking: Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina is ideally suited for a compact road trip, offering a combination of historic cities, mountain landscapes and riverside scenery within relatively short driving distances. Travelling by car allows you to experience the country at your own pace, moving easily between cultural landmarks and natural settings.
The route from Sarajevo to Mostar is one of the most rewarding journeys in the country, following the Neretva River through a landscape of valleys, lakes and mountains. Along the way, smaller towns such as Konjic and the area around Jablanica Lake provide natural stopping points that add depth to the journey.
For Muslim travellers, the country’s strong Islamic heritage and the wide availability of halal food make travelling both convenient and culturally enriching.
Car rental and driving in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Renting a car is the most practical way to explore Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly when travelling between cities and more remote natural areas. The widest choice of vehicles is available at Sarajevo International Airport, where both international and local rental companies operate. Booking in advance is recommended during peak travel periods.
Road conditions on main routes are generally good, especially along the M17 highway connecting Sarajevo to Mostar. This route follows the Neretva River and is considered one of the most scenic drives in the country.
Drivers should be aware that:
Roads can be narrow and winding in mountainous areas
Speed limits are clearly signposted and typically lower outside urban areas
Headlights are required at all times, including during daylight hours
Fuel stations are available along major routes, though less frequent in rural areas
Parking is usually available in towns and cities, either in designated roadside areas or public car parks.
Itinerary
Sarajevo → Konjic: approx. 60 km (1 hour)
Konjic → Jablanica Lake: approx. 15 km (15 minutes)
Jablanica Lake → Mostar: approx. 45 km (1 hour)
Mostar → Sarajevo: approx. 130 km (2 to 2.5 hours)
Although distances are modest, journey times may vary slightly due to winding roads and changes in elevation. This route can comfortably be completed over 2 to 4 days, including the return journey to Sarajevo, with short driving distances allowing time to explore each stop along the way.

Starting point: Sarajevo (1–2 days)
Sarajevo is a natural starting point for a road trip through Bosnia and Herzegovina, combining historical depth with a compact and walkable centre. Its layered cultural identity is reflected in the old town of Baščaršija, where Ottoman architecture, mosques and traditional cafés define the atmosphere.

Key landmarks include the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, one of the most significant Islamic sites in the Balkans, as well as the historic bazaar, which remains an active centre of daily life. Visitors can also explore sites such as the Sarajevo Tunnel and the Latin Bridge, which provide insight into the city’s more recent and historic past.

The city offers a wide choice of halal-friendly accommodation, making it a convenient base before beginning your journey south.
Konjic (half day or overnight stay)
Around 1 hour south of Sarajevo, Konjic marks the transition from the capital to a more rural and mountainous landscape. Set along the Neretva River, the town is known for the Stara Ćuprija (Old Bridge), an Ottoman structure that remains one of its defining landmarks.

The Vardačka Džamija Mosque reflects the town’s long-standing Islamic heritage and its more recent history. The riverside setting and slower pace of life make Konjic a pleasant stop to explore on foot or as a short overnight stay before continuing further south.
Jablanica Lake (short stop or scenic break)
Continuing south, Jablanica Lake appears as the road follows the Neretva River through a narrow valley. Formed by a dam in the mid-20th century, the lake extends through a series of curves, with clear water set against steep, forested slopes.
The area offers several informal stopping points along the lakeshore, making it ideal for a short break during the journey. The surrounding scenery makes this one of the most visually striking sections of the route between Sarajevo and Mostar.

Final stop: Mostar (1–2 days)
Around 1 hour from Jablanica, Mostar is one of the country’s most recognisable destinations. Its historic centre is organised around the Stari Most (Old Bridge), a reconstruction of the original 16th-century Ottoman structure and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The surrounding old town features traditional shops, mosques and small restaurants, reflecting the city’s past as a trading centre. The Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque offers elevated views across the river and the bridge, while nearby sites such as the Blagaj Tekija provide additional context to the region’s Ottoman heritage.
Also visit the Kajtaz House - a traditional Ottoman harem which the original family still owns, although it is now a museum.
Spending at least one night in Mostar allows time to experience the city beyond peak daytime hours, when the atmosphere becomes noticeably calmer.
Return journey
After exploring Mostar, the journey can continue as a return drive to Sarajevo, following the same route along the Neretva River. The return trip offers another opportunity to take in the landscape from a different perspective, with the option to stop again in Konjic or along Jablanica Lake.
For those with additional time, the return can be taken at a more relaxed pace the following day. Alternatively, some travellers may choose to extend their journey further south before returning to Sarajevo.
A road trip through Bosnia and Herzegovina offers a balanced mix of cultural heritage and natural scenery within a relatively short distance. From the historic streets of Sarajevo to the riverside landscapes of Herzegovina, the journey provides a varied and accessible way to experience the country at your own pace.
