Halalbooking guide to halal-friendly holidays in Lombok

Introducing Lombok, Indonesia's lesser-known island than nearby Bali, but just as stunning and well worth a visit. While both are beautiful in their own right, Lombok often doesn't get the attention or recognition the island deserves. Let us balance the scales for you so you can make an informed decision in choosing this stunning island of Indonesia for your halal holiday.

Because Lombok is less touristy than Bali, the idyllic beaches are well-preserved and less crowded. The island's natural beauty remains untouched and just sitting amongst the locals amidst nature makes the destination attractive. If you enjoy learning about local culture and traditions while travelling, then Lombok is for you. Watch local artisans and craftsmen at work in the village of Masbagik, where beautiful pottery and other souvenirs are popular.

Pristine pink beaches, evergreen mountains and crystal clear waterfalls paint an enchanting picture and certainly one that will be unforgettable and etched in your memories forever on your halal getaway in Lombok. Visit and demystify this island on your travels off the beaten track. Curate your experiences and be different, visit artisans and watch the masters at work in their local environment. You will be greeted on your halal holiday with communities of people who have made Lombok the lovely island it is today. Surfing, diving, fishing, hiking, cooking and relaxing complete the offer. Lombok is also cheaper than Bali, and the Indonesian rupiah is sure to go further. Treating yourself to a luxury experience has never been easier!

Practical information before visiting Lombok

The gateway to Lombok is Lombok International Airport (LOP). All the facilities you need are available including a money changer, information desks, banks and ATMs. From the airport you can easily take public transport or taxis.

When you visit, keep the weather in mind. Lombok has only two seasons, wet and dry, with the dry season lasting from May to October. The best months to visit are July to August, the coldest months but still plenty of sunshine with temperatures reaching as high as 29°C.

Lombok for the halal-conscious traveller

In Lombok, Islam is the dominant religion and the Sasak are predominantly Muslim. Known as the island of mosques, there are reportedly over 1,000 mosques - create a journey by visiting different mosques daily. The oldest mosque on the island, the Bayan Beleq Mosque dates back to 1634. Selong Grand Mosque is the main mosque on the island.

Indonesia has endorsed Lombok as the perfect halal-friendly holiday destination due to its appeal to Muslims. What is quite unique about the island is that the call to prayer is heard everywhere. The beautiful beaches in Lombok also accept modest dress and worship facilities for both men and women.

Sites to visit in Lombok

Gili Islands
Visit the group of 3 islands - Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air just off the northwest coast of Lombok. Famous for the coral reefs, you can see the sea turtles that swim around some of the islands and the exciting and colourful wildlife. Snorkelling and diving are popular activities, especially to see the underwater statues and sunken shipwrecks.

Mount Rinjani
Lombok's tallest volcano is worth a hike and is by far the most popular tourist activity in Lombok. This three-day trek is pricey but worth every coin—see panoramic views of Lombok and watch the sun rise over the horizon.

Senggigi
Senggigi Beach is Lombok's main tourist strip and popular for going out and eating. Senggigi is a good base for exploring all of Lombok and is a popular area for organised activities such as surfing. There are also a number of restaurants and cafes.

Lombok Waterfalls
Take a trot around Lombok's incredible array of waterfalls and showcase the island's natural beauty. In the hills of Lombok you can hike to these natural phenomena. Perhaps the most popular waterfalls are Tiu Kelep Waterfall and Sendang Gile Waterfall - both stunning attractions set amidst a lush tropical jungle.

Pink Beach
Tangsi Beach, known as Pink Beach because of its pink sand, is one of only 10 pink sand beaches in the world. The stunning beach is a must-see when in Lombok and the best time to visit to see the beach in its truest element and the most beautiful palette of colours is during the golden hours from 10am to 4pm. The pink colour comes from the reefs, which are also a fantastic place to see if you're going snorkelling.

Halal food and restaurants in Lombok

Lombok has an abundance of halal food choices, mainly in Mataram, the island's capital. Sample all the local delicacies and cuisine - it's always a good idea to learn about the culture by tasting the cuisine and watching the experts at work. Try Ayam Taliwang - a twice grilled chicken, first half cooked and then dipped in oil, shrimp paste, garlic and chilli and grilled again. Also try Satay Rembiga - grilled meat on a skewer with rice. When you hear "satay," you know it's authentically Indonesian - this dish is named after the village where the recipe came from.

We would highly recommend a food tour. Not only will you learn about the best dishes made to order, but you will also learn a lot about the ability to cook authentic Indonesian cuisine. It's also a good way to dare and see what all the dishes behind the name look like. You will have peace of mind that most halal restaurants do not serve alcohol either.
