How to Perform Umrah: The Complete Ritual Guide & Overview
How to Perform Umrah
Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage built around four sequential pillars: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa‘i, and Tahallul. Unlike Hajj, it can be performed at any time of year and takes between two and four hours under typical conditions. This guide covers the spiritual foundations, the chronological roadmap, Miqat boundaries, ritual etiquette, and the key variations for women and the elderly.
The Essence of Umrah: Understanding the Pillars of the Pilgrimage
Umrah is structured around four Pillars (Arkan) — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa‘i, and Tahallul — each of which is indispensable. Alongside these sit Mandatory Acts (Wajibat) — such as entering Ihram at the correct Miqat — which are obligatory but whose omission can be compensated witha penalty(Dam). Understanding this distinction determines whether an error renders your Umrah invalid or simply requires remedy.
Preparing Your Soul: The Spiritual Mindset Before Arrival
Allah's Messenger (saw) said, "(The performance of) Umrah is a compensation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1773
The Niyyah (intention) is the sincere resolve of the heart made at the Miqat — not a complicated verbal formula. Scholars consistently advise pilgrims to learn the rituals before departure, seek forgiveness from those they may have wronged, settle financial obligations, and approach Ihram as a symbolic stripping-away of worldly identity.
Before assuming Ihram, perform Ghusl (ritual bath). Men may apply perfume to the body before making the Niyyah; once Ihram is assumed, all perfumed products are prohibited.
Pro Tip
Flying into Jeddah from your country? Your aircraft crosses the Miqat boundary approximately 45 minutes before landing. Wear your Ihram before boarding — do not rely on changing in the aircraft toilets at the announcement.
The Four Stages of Umrah: A Chronological Roadmap
Umrah follows a fixed sequence — performing stages out of order is not valid.
Stage
Ritual
What to do
Stage 1
Entering Ihram at the Miqat
Perform Ghusl, wear the Ihram garments, make Niyyah for Umrah, and begin reciting the Talbiyah. Continue until Tawaf begins.
Stage 2
Tawaf al-Umrah
Circumambulate the Ka‘bah seven times anticlockwise from the Black Stone. Wudu required. Men perform Idtiba and Ramal in the first three circuits.
Stage 3
Sa‘i Between Safa and Marwa
Walk seven times between Safa and Marwa (Safa to Marwa = one lap). Begin at Safa; end at Marwa. Men jog lightly between the green-lit markers.
Stage 4
Tahallul — Exiting Ihram
Men shave (Halq, preferred) or trim (Taqsir). Women cut a fingertip’s length (2–3 cm) from the hair ends only. All Ihram prohibitions are lifted once complete.
Navigating the Miqat: Where and How Your Journey Begins
The Miqat is the sacred boundary every pilgrim must cross in a state of Ihram. Crossing without Ihram is a Wajib violation requiring Dam (a penalty).
Al-Juhfah Miqat
Enter Ihram before the aircraft crosses the Al-Juhfah alignment — approximately 45 minutes before landing at Jeddah. Jeddah is inside the Miqat boundary; you cannot assume Ihram on arrival at the airport or in the city.
Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali)
Enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah, approximately 9 km south of Masjid an-Nabawi, before travelling to Makkah. This is the Miqat for the people of Madinah and those passing through it.
Masjid Aisha (Taneem)
Performing a second Umrah? Return to the nearest Miqat before re-entering Ihram. Masjid Aisha (Al-Tan‘im), approximately 7 km from the Haram, is the most convenient option for pilgrims already in Makkah.
Ritual Etiquette (Adab): Maintaining Sanctity in the Haramain
"Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’s Messenger are the ones whose hearts Allah has refined for righteousness. They will have forgiveness and a great reward."
Surah Al-Hujurat - Ayat 3
Voice and conduct: lower your voice at all times; disputes are prohibited during Ihram. Crowds and patience: the Mataf holds over 100,000 at peak times — move steadily and do not push; a gesture toward the Black Stone from a distance carries full spiritual weight. Dhikr over devices: photography is permissible but should not replace worship during Tawaf and Sa‘i.
Do not conduct Tawaf in groups holding hands or ropes — prohibited by Haram authorities
If Wudu breaks during Tawaf, exit, renew it, and resume mid-circuit — no need to restart
Men: keep the right shoulder uncovered (Idtiba) during Tawaf; cover before the two Rak‘ahs at Maqam Ibrahim
Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the Mataf or Sa‘i corridor
Post-Umrah Reflection: Exiting the State of Ihram
Rules for Hair Cutting (Tahallul)
Men: Shaving the head (Halq) is the most preferred option. Trimming a finger's width (Taqsir) is also acceptable.
Women: Only trimming (Taqsir) is permitted. They should cut a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair and do not require a barber.
Personal Supplication (Du‘a)
Immediately after completing the Tahallul, take advantage of this time for extended personal du‘a. You are still in the sacred precincts of the holiest site on earth.
Pro Tip
There is no prescribed waiting period between Umrahs. Return to the Miqat, re-enter Ihram with fresh Niyyah, and perform all four stages again.
Ritual Variations: Differences for Women and the Elderly
Islamic jurisprudence makes specific, well-established accommodations for women, the elderly, and those requiring mobility assistance. None compromise the validity of the Umrah.

Unstitched white sheets; head uncovered
Loose full-coverage clothing; head covered
Tawaf pace
Ramal (brisk walk) in first 3 circuits
Normal pace throughout all 7 circuits

Fully valid; same ruling applies
Sa‘i pace
Jog between green-lit markers
Walk throughout; no jogging required
Wheelchair users
The Mataf has a dedicated first-floor wheelchair track and motorised wheelchairs are available for hire for Sa‘i.
Elderly pilgrims
To lessen the impact of the crowds, elderly pilgrims should consider performing these acts during quieter times, such as after Dhuhr until Asr prayer, or late in the morning.
Women during menstruation
All rites may be performed except Tawaf, which requires Taharah — plan sufficient buffer time in Makkah.
Frequently Asked Questions
Essential FAQs to help you understand the rites, rules, and practical steps of performing Umrah with complete confidence.
What are the four mandatory pillars of Umrah?
The four Arkan are Ihram, Tawaf, Sa‘i, and Halq or Taqsir. All four must be completed; omitting any one nullifies the Umrah entirely, requiring it to be repeated.
Can I perform Umrah if I missed a Miqat point?
Crossing the Miqat without Ihram is a Wajib breach, not a Pillar omission — your Umrah remains valid but requires Dam (typically the slaughter of a sheep in Makkah). If you realise the error before completing Umrah, return to the Miqat and enter Ihram to avoid the Dam entirely.
How long does it typically take to complete a full Umrah?
Outside Ramadan and Hajj season: two to four hours. During the last 10 nights of Ramadan or the pre-Hajj peak, the same rituals can take six to eight hours. Arrive post-Ishraq (before Dhuhr) or in the post-Asr window for lighter crowds.
Is it permissible to use a wheelchair for Tawaf and Sa‘i?
Yes — fully permissible and well-established in Islamic jurisprudence. The Masjid al-Haram has a dedicated first-floor wheelchair Tawaf track; motorised wheelchairs are available for hire for Sa‘i. Book through your hotel in advance during peak seasons.
What should I do if my Wudu breaks during Tawaf?
Exit the Mataf, renew Wudu, and resume from the point you left off — you do not need to restart from the Black Stone. If unsure of your circuit number, assume the lower number.

Maskhoutah Station
Long 30 minutes walk to King Abdulaziz Gate approaching from the south-east side, compared to 8 minutes from the southern drop-offs.
Ajyad Street
Surface streets rather than a tunnel, so the ride is traffic-dependent: short in distance, but slower than the tunnel routes at prayer times and in Ramadan.
Al-Kidwah Tunnel
Tunnelled for most of the way, so the ride duration changes far less at prayer times than the surface-road routes do. Comes in from the south, past the Clock Tower.
Aljamaraat Tunnel
Tunnelled for most of the way from the Aljamaraat and Jarwal side, avoiding the busiest surface streets; short street sections at either end can still add a few minutes at peak times.
Mahbas Al Jinn Tunnel
Traffic-protected tunnel from the Mahbas Al Jinn and Aziziyah side, but it starts further out than the central tunnels: a longer ride than those, and a steadier one than the road routes.
Maskhoutah Tunnel
Tunnel route from the eastern side of Makkah: one of the longest rides, as it starts well out from the Haram, but less exposed to traffic than the main-road routes.
Masfalah Tunnel
Short, tunnelled ride from the Masfalah side - closer in than the eastern tunnels and less exposed to street traffic than the road routes.
Kudai Tunnel
Direct tunnel from the Kudai and Ajyad side, shielded from street traffic for most of the way, so the ride stays close to the same figure at any time of day.
Al-Khandama Road
Surface road rather than a tunnel: the ride depends on traffic and local access restrictions, so it varies through the day far more than the tunnel routes.
Jabal Omar
Internal route through the Jabal Omar complex to a Haram-facing drop-off, therefore duration not affected by traffic.
Aziziah Road
Main roads the whole way from Aziziah: the most traffic-exposed of the routes, and the most likely to run to the top of its journey-time range at prayer times.
