Essential Umrah Duas: Categorised Prayers for Every Ritual Stage

Essential Umrah Duas: Categorised Prayers for Every Ritual Stage

The Ultimate Umrah Dua Library

Dua is the essence of worship and the direct link between a believer and Allah (SWT). There is no place more powerful to pour out one's heart than within the Haramain. We have curated a verified library of authentic supplications for your Umrah, guiding you from your doorstep to the Rawdah of the Messenger of Allah (SAW). Sourced from the Quran and Sahih Hadith, these duas are presented in Arabic and English to ensure your tongue and heart are united in remembrance.

The Spiritual Power of Dua

“The Prophet (SAW) said: Supplication (du'a') is itself the worship. (He then recited:) "And your Lord said: Call on Me, I will answer you".”
Sunan Abi Dawud 1479

It is not an addition to worship — it is worship in its purest form. Every sincere supplication made in the Haramain is offered in a place where the scales tip differently: rewards are multiplied, supplications are more readily answered, and the distance between the servant and the Divine feels measurably shorter.
There are locations within the Haram that Islamic tradition identifies as places where duas are especially likely to be accepted — in front of the Kaaba, at the Multazam, on Safa and Marwa, when drinking Zamzam, and at the Rawdah. Knowing these spots — and arriving at them prepared — is one of the most practical steps you can take to maximise the spiritual return on your journey.

Duas for Preparation: From Your Home to the Miqat

Authenticated supplications for departure and for entering the state of Ihram

Before the first step of your journey, Islam provides a framework of supplication that transforms ordinary travel into an act of worship. These are the authenticated supplications for departure and for entering the state of Ihram.

Dua upon Leaving the House

In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, there is no might and no power except by Allah.

Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 — graded Sahih. Recite upon stepping out of your home at the start of your journey.

Dua upon Boarding Transport (Safar Dua)

Glory be to the One Who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own˺ and surely to our Lord we will ˹all˺ return.

Sahih Muslim 1342 · Quran 43:13–14. Recite when boarding aircraft, coach, or any transport.

The Talbiyah — Entered at the Miqat

The defining declaration of Ihram

The Talbiyah is the defining declaration of Ihram. It is recited continuously from the moment you enter the state of Ihram — at the Miqat boundary — until you begin your first Tawaf in Makkah. Men recite it aloud; women recite it quietly.

The Talbiyah

Labbaik la sharika laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.I am here at Your service, O Allah, I am here at Your service. I am here at Your service, You have no partner, I am here at Your service. Surely the praise, and blessings are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.

Agreed upon by Muslim, Bukhari, Abi Dawud and others.

Pro Tip

If you are flying into Jeddah (which is inside the Miqat boundary), wear your Ihram before boarding your flight and make your intention in the air when the captain announces the Miqat zone. Changing into Ihram in an aircraft lavatory is not ideal but valid if you miss the announcement — however, no delay in reciting the Talbiyah is recommended once dressed.

Circumambulating the Kaaba: Essential Duas for Tawaf

The Prophet (SAW) did not prescribe a fixed dua for every individual circuit of the Kaaba. This means the seven circuits are a vast, open invitation for personal supplication in your own language. Two specific Sunnahs, however, are established by authentic narrations and should be observed precisely.

Takbir at the Black Stone

Allahu AkbarAllah is the Greatest

Sahih al-Bukhari 1613. Recited each time you align with the Black Stone to begin a new circuit. If you cannot reach it, point towards it and say the Takbir.

Dua Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

Give to us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire.

Sunan Abi Dawud 1892 — Graded Hasan Sahih by Al-Albani | Riyad as-Salihin 1364 | Also a Quranic supplication (Quran 2:201). Recited in the stretch from the Yemeni Corner to the Black Stone in each of the 7 circuits.

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

This is the single specific dua authenticated by hadith for a fixed position during Tawaf. It is recited during the final stretch of each circuit — from the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani) to the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). The Yemeni Corner is touched with the right hand if easily reachable; kissing is not prescribed for this corner.

Pro Tip

Between the Takbir at the Black Stone and the specific Dua near the Yemeni Corner, the remaining portion of each circuit is yours. Recite your personal Duas, Quran verses you have memorised, or continuous Dhikr — all are correct and rewarded. Do not feel pressured to read from a booklet while moving through the crowd; maintaining your footing and composure is itself part of the worship.

After Tawaf — The Two Rak'ahs at Maqam Ibrahim

After completing the seventh circuit, pray two rak'ahs behind or near Maqam Ibrahim.

The Prophet (SAW) reached Mecca, circumambulated the Kaaba seven times and then offered a two rakat prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim. Then he went towards the Safa. Allah has said, "Verily, in Allah's Apostle you have a good example."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1627

Walking Between Safa and Marwa: Supplications for Sa'i

Recitation When First Approaching Safa

Innas-safaa wal-marwata min sha'aa'irillaahIndeed, ˹the hills of˺ Ṣafa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes the major or minor pilgrimage to the ˹Sacred˺ House, let them walk between ˹the two hills˺. And whoever does good willingly, Allah is truly Appreciative, All-Knowing.

Surah Al-Baqarah - Ayat 158

Sa'i begins immediately after the two rak'ahs of Tawaf and the drinking of Zamzam water. The seven trips between Safa and Marwa — beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa — follow a specific supplication pattern established in the hadith of Jabir (Sahih Muslim 1218), which records the Prophet's saw own Hajj in extraordinary detail.

Standing on Safa and Marwa — Facing the Qibla

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ، وَهَزَمَ الْأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُLa ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He is Able to do all things. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.

Sahih Muslim 1218 (Long Hadith of Jabir) | Recite, then make personal Dua; recite again, then Dua; recite a third time. Repeat this pattern at each of the 7 stops on Safa and Marwa.

Upon ascending Safa (and later Marwa), face the Kaaba direction, raise your hands, and recite the following sequence — three times — with personal Duas made between each repetition

Pro tip

During the walking portions between Safa and Marwa: no specific text is prescribed in authentic narrations. Engage in general Dhikr — Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah — or make personal supplications freely.

The Prophet's City: Specific Duas for Madinah and the Rawdah

Madinah al-Munawwarah is not a ritual obligation of Umrah, but it is among the most spiritually significant visits a Muslim can make. The manners of entering the city, greeting the Prophet (SAW), and supplicating within the Rawdah are established by narration and scholarly consensus. To pray inside the Rawdah, ensure your permit is secured in advance — see our Rawdah Guide.

Salam upon Entering the Prophet's Mosque

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

Stand facing the grave with composure. Greet quietly and with full presence of heart.

Upon entering Masjid an-Nabawi and approaching the noble grave, the following greeting is narrated from the practice of the Companions.

Salawat (Blessings upon the Prophet (saw))

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌAllahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid.O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are the Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3370. The Ibrahimiyyah Salawat — the most complete and authenticated form, recited in every prayer and especially in the Rawdah.

Dua in the Rawdah Ash-Sharifah

The Rawdah — the area between the Prophet's (SAW) grave and his pulpit — is described in an authenticated hadith as a garden from the gardens of Paradise. After sending Salawat upon the Prophet (SAW), this is the appropriate place for prolonged personal supplication. There is no single prescribed text; scholars encourage sincere, personal dua in your own language after the Salawat.

The Sunnah of Drinking Zamzam

Intentions and supplications — Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for

Zamzam is not ordinary water, and drinking it is not an ordinary act. The Prophet (SAW) said the water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for. This makes the intention (niyyah) made before drinking critically important. The Companions would make specific, personal intentions before each cup.

Dua Before Drinking Zamzam

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan wasi'an wa shifa'an min kulli da'.O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure from every disease.

Face the Qibla, drink in three sips while standing, and make your personal intention before the first sip.

Scholars recommend deciding your Zamzam intention before you reach the tap — not after the cup is in your hand. Intentions made with clarity and advanced thought are more likely to reflect genuine need. Many pilgrims choose one central dua (such as seeking a cure for illness or accepting Umrah) and repeat it with each cup.

Pro tip

Zamzam is available in large quantities throughout Masjid al-Haram and in most hotels in Makkah. You do not need to drink it only once. Return to it frequently — after Tawaf, after Sa'i, before resting — and use each cup as an occasion for intentional supplication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers about the duas during your DIY Umrah

Are there specific Duas that must be recited for Umrah to be accepted?

No. There are no specific verbal supplications whose absence would invalidate Umrah. The pillars of Umrah are Ihram (with intention), Tawaf, Sa'i, and Tahallul — none require the recitation of a particular Dua text to be valid. The Duas on this page are Sunnah practices that increase reward and spiritual depth — they are the recommended way to perform Umrah, not a condition of its validity.

Can I read Duas from my phone while performing Tawaf?

Yes. Reading Duas from a phone screen during Tawaf is permissible and widely practised. The priority is to keep your attention on the worship itself — use the phone as a reference tool rather than a barrier. Keep screen brightness low, use a secure grip, and maintain awareness of your surroundings in the Mataf. Many pilgrims find it more effective to memorise two or three key Duas before travel rather than reading a screen while walking, but both are valid.

What is the best Dua to recite when first seeing the Kaaba?

There is no specific Dua prescribed in authenticated narrations for the first sight of the Kaaba. This moment is one of personal supplication — raise your hands and ask sincerely. You are standing before Al-Baytullah; every moment in its presence is an opportunity to pray and seek forgiveness from Allah.

Should I recite Duas in Arabic even if I don't understand the meaning?

Arabic Duas carry their own spiritual weight and follow the Prophetic example precisely. There is no contradiction between the two approaches: begin with the authenticated Arabic text, then follow immediately with your personal supplication in the language you understand most deeply. Allah hears and understands all languages.

Are there any prohibited times or places for making personal Duas?

No, personal Dua is not prohibited at any time or place within the Haram. However, for the times most likely for acceptance: make much supplication whilst in prostration, as the Prophet pbuh said this is when a servant is closest to his Lord (Sahih Muslim 482); supplication between the Adhan and Iqamah is not rejected (Sunan Abi Dawud 521); and in the last third of the night, Allah descends to the lowest heaven and calls out: who is asking of Me that I may give him? (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758).
