Is Croatia Muslim-friendly?

Since Croatia is over 90% Christian and Muslims only make up about 1% of the population, there aren't many mosques or halal restaurants. However, you are likely to find restaurants that serve halal food in the larger cities of Zagreb and Split. While there are only four official mosques and two Islamic centers throughout Croatia, there may also be smaller prayer facilities throughout the country.

Places to visit in Croatia

Zagreb
The capital of Croatia is a very pedestrian-friendly, compact place and easy to navigate thanks to its cobblestone streets. It is a place full of history, culture, a vibrant nightlife and museums. Visit Dolac, the town's daily market, to buy fresh produce or head to the Botanical Gardens for some greenery.

Split
Croatia's second largest city is ideally situated on the Adriatic coast and is an exuberant mix of traditional culture and modern life. Visit Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world, as well as the picturesque Peristil Square, the most central point of the city.

Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, another coastal city at Croatia's southernmost point, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. Visit the famous Old Town, fortified by medieval city walls, and take a Game of Thrones tour.

Plitvice Lakes National Park
This UNESCO World Heritage-listed park has 16 lakes, all connected by small waterfalls. This is a popular tourist attraction and tickets must be purchased in advance.

Are there mosques in Croatia?

While there are only four official mosques and two Islamic centers throughout Croatia, there may also be smaller prayer facilities throughout the country. Here are the mosques:

Zagreb Mosque
This is the largest mosque in Croatia and was built in 1987. In addition to being open for daily prayers, there is also a secondary school and a cultural center within the mosque.

Gunja Mosque
It was built in 1969 and is located in the village of Gunja on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the oldest mosque in Croatia and has an Ottoman style.

Rijeka Mosque
Located in Rijeka, this mosque was built in 2013 and has been described as being one of the most beautiful mosques in Europe. Its location offers wonderful views of the Kvarner Bay.

Zadar Mosque
The Zadar Mosque is located in the old town of Zadar on the Adriatic coast. It was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century for the Muslim community.
