Eastern Province Guide: Al Khobar, Dammam & Al Ahsa Oasis
Oases, Heritage, and Gulf Coastlines
The Eastern Province is Saudi Arabia's most undervisited region by international pilgrims — and one of its most rewarding. The UNESCO-listed Al Ahsa Oasis, the world's largest date palm forest, sits alongside the modern Gulf waterfront of Al Khobar, the world-class Ithra cultural centre, and the family beach destination of Half Moon Bay. A domestic flight from Jeddah reaches King Fahd International Airport in approximately 90 minutes, making it a practical three-to-four night extension.
Transport: Getting to and Around the Eastern Province
Two practical routes from Makkah and Madinah, plus a comfortable cross-country rail option
King Fahd International Airport
King Fahd International Airport (DMM) is the gateway to the Eastern Province. From Jeddah ~1 hr 30 min, Riyadh ~1 hr. From Makkah, allow 3–4 hours door-to-door via Haramain to Jeddah and onward flight. Airport is 35 km north of Al Khobar.
The Riyadh–Dammam Railway
For pilgrims combining Riyadh with the Eastern Province, the Saudi Railway (SAR) line connects Riyadh to Dammam in 2 hr 30 min. Removes one airport transfer. Dammam station is in central Dammam; Al Khobar is 15 minutes south by road.
Practical note
If you are combining Riyadh and the Eastern Province in one trip, fly into Riyadh first and take the SAR train to Dammam — it removes one airport transfer and gives you a comfortable cross-country journey as part of the experience.
Al Ahsa Oasis: The World's Largest Date Palm Forest
Al Ahsa Oasis was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 — a cultural landscape of over 85 square kilometres, three million date palms irrigated by ancient artesian springs (some flowing continuously for over a thousand years), and traditional mud-brick villages that feel unlike anywhere else in the Arabian Peninsula. Al Ahsa is approximately 80 km south-west of Al Khobar — a one-hour drive, best visited as a full-day excursion or overnight stay.

Al Qarah Mountain Caves
Jabal Al Qarah is a limestone plateau riddled with natural caves that remain cool year-round. Lit walkways guide visitors through stalactite chambers; the plateau above offers a panoramic view across the full extent of the oasis. Cool and shaded even in summer.

Ibrahim Palace (Qasr Ibrahim)
Ibrahim Palace is a 16th-century Ottoman fortification at the centre of Hofuf, the main settlement of Al Ahsa. The fortress walls and inner courtyards are accessible to visitors and represent one of the best-preserved Ottoman-era structures in the Eastern Peninsula.

Al Qaysariyah Souq
Five minutes' walk from Ibrahim Palace, Al Qaysariyah Souq is one of the oldest covered markets in the Arabian Peninsula — over 400 shops of traditional fabrics, handmade silver, spices, oud, and the region's famous dates. Most atmospheric in the late afternoon and evening.
Al Khobar & Dammam: Modern Life on the Arabian Gulf
A family-friendly Gulf waterfront, a flagship Vision 2030 cultural centre, and a crescent beach

The Khobar Corniche
A Gulf waterfront with parks, restaurants, and the city's distinctive Water Tower. One of the most pleasant urban waterfronts in Saudi Arabia in the evenings. Best dining stretch: the northern section near the King Fahd Causeway approach.

Ithra Cultural Centre
Ithra (King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture) in Dhahran — a Vision 2030 flagship in polished-steel architecture, housing a 200,000+ volume library, cinema, museums, and a children's museum. Entry to the main building and permanent galleries is free.
Culinary Journey: From Gulf Seafood to Oasis Dates
The Dammam Fish Market near the old port is one of the most authentic food experiences in the province — fresh Gulf catch each morning, with nearby restaurants grilling your purchase to order. Al Ahsa is the source of some of the world's finest dates. The region produces over 100 varieties; the standouts are the soft amber Khlasah (considered by many connoisseurs the finest date in Arabia), the firm golden Sukkari, and the dark, intensely flavoured Ruthana. Buy directly from the source at Al Qaysariyah Souq in Hofuf.
Practical note
Ask the vendor to vacuum-seal your dates for travel. Khlasah dates in particular do not travel well without packaging; sealed, they last several weeks and make exceptional gifts.
